Keran and Tila were both walking (and Ting was flying) when the tall sheikah suddenly stopped. He turned to his small partner and said: "Let's make a stop. The lake is too far for us to reach it before night has fallen."
And indeed, it was getting a bit late.
OOC: I'm wondering...which one would be more likely to ask for a sparring ? Keran may want to know what his little teammate can do, and Tila is probably eager to prove her worth...

Things were quiet in Hyrule Field all day long as the two walked along that day. They had started out talking about this and that, but they eventually turned to their own thoughts. Although the world around her still presented endless fascination, Tila was feeling just a little bit impatient to get to Lake Hyla. After hearing about the monsters that supposedly roamed around the lake, Tila had gotten herself worked up about fighting them and finding up what they were up to, and she got nothing in the currently peaceful Hyrule Field to satisfy her adventurous spirit. She looked at the tall sheikah with some disappointment when he stopped.
"Already? How much farther is the lake?"
She peered forward, but even Tila's sharp eyes could not yet see a landmark that would indicate the great Lake Hyla.
"This 'outside world' really is big if we've been walking around all day without reaching the lake!"
Although disappointed, Tila resigned herself to the fact that they would not arrive until later.
"Ok, shall we set up camp here, partner?"
OOC: Check your messages.

The red-eyed warrior nodded and said: "Indeed. But there's something I think we should do first, if you don't mind."
He took one of his wakisashi in his hand, without drawing it out of its sheath.
"Since we are partner, we have to be fully aware of each other's skills. I showed you my stealth this morning for this reason."
He tied the hilt of the short katana to the sheath so that it wouldn't be drawn out by mistake.
"Now...we're going to spar so that I know what you are capable of in close combat."
Then, he smiled.
"...and I might teach you a few tricks in the process."

The small Kokiri's pointy ears visibly perked up a fraction of an inch in interest.
A challenge... He may not be a monster, but fighting him is sure to be a good workout.
Tila's attitude was serious, but a twinkle that appeared in her eye gave away her interest in the idea. She began to loosen her belt so that the Kokiri sword hanging from her left hip could be removed from it, sheath and all.
"Ok, partner, I'm up to that. What are the rules?"

"Rule number one: no magic. For the moment, I just need to know how good you are when wielding your sword. Rule number two: attack me as if it were a real fight. If you hold back, I won't see how good you really are."
He mused for a few seconds and then said with a smile, as he got into a fighting stance:
"I think that's all. Okay, try to hit me !"

Tila removed the sheath from her belt and re-tightened it. Next, she took off her headband and used it to secure her Kokiri Sword in its sheath so that it wouldn't hurt Keran in case she scored a hit.
"That sounds fair. I guess you'll have to see my magic later."
Holding her sword in her right hand, Tila gave a respectful bow.
He's a lot bigger then I am, but I can't let that scare me. Still, he's not going to be a pushover either.
She got into a fighting stance of her own. Wasting no time, she quickly took a step forward and swung her sword in a horizontal ark, aiming for Keran's ribs. Although still sheathed, her Kokiri sword still swung faster then most people facing a Kokiri would expect.

Unfortunately for Tila, Keran had never fought a kokiri before. Tila's above-average speed did not catch him off guard or surprised him, as he didn't know what to expect to begin with. He had no prejudice.
The young sheikah was curious to see how the small girl compensated for her weaknesses, especially her short reach. Being who she was, she had shorter arms, and had to fight wielding a short sword. Although his wakizashi wasn't much longer than a kokiri sword, his long arms made that he had a greater striking range than her.
Which is why he simply extended his arm in a swift motion so as to hit her forehead, even before she was close enough to hit him.

Tila rebounded slightly from being blocked in the head, her sword coming up short of her target. She used the momentum from Keran's push to help her perform a couple of backflips and put some distance between them.
Not bad. He knew the best way to stop me. Let's see how he handles this...
Trying a new tactic, Tila ran forward towards Keran with her sword held in front of her.
OOC: I wrote the part of the Kokiri sword swinging faster then expected in there because of what it says in its item entry: that it would be lighter for a small person ( like Tila) then it would be for a larger person without it being any less potent. Basically, it would be easier for her to wield it effectively then would be expected from a person her size and a sword that size. Still, Keran simply blocking her like that is a fair move, so no worries.

She didn't expect me to do that, yet she reacted immediately after that. And she's more lumber than I expected her to be.
He got back to his fighting stance and raised his eyebrows when Tila came for her second attack.
What is she thinking, running straight at me like that ? Doing that is a bit rash...it's like asking for a...
He lunged forward with enough impulse to fall forward, using his right hand to prevent himself from stupidly falling to the ground, and slashed at Tila with his wakizashi (in his left hand) in a horizontal motion.
(OOC: I hope that I am clear enough. His stance is now basically that of a four-legged animal except that his left hand is holding a wakizashi)
...counter.
If Tila avoided the attack, Keran planned to roll to the side (using his right hand).

Tila was equally surprised when Keran lunged forward instead of coming at her upright. His low attack would make her upcoming move more risky, but she didn't have much time to think about it. All she could do was to follow through with her plan. Tila threw her legs in front of her and her run became a feet-first slide on the ground with the intention of passing right between Keran's legs.
This is going to be close...
As she fell backwards to the ground at the beginning of her slide, Keran's horizontal slash just barely missed hitting her descending head. Ignoring the discomfort of sliding on the ground, Tila slashed at Keran's left leg with her sword in her right hand as she passed just under him.

What ? Below ?
Keran did not expect at all an attack from below, as he had got as low as possible himself.
Had he not changed his plan, Tila would have probably hit him. But instead of rolling to the side, just like he had planned to, he gave a violent impulse with his legs and jumped forward, as if he were a big black red-eyed frog.
He landed on his legs, turned around, and smiled:
"You had me surprised here. You sure know how to take advantage of your short size."

He didn't hit me!
Tila scrambled to her feet, the unorthodox nature of her attack preventing something more graceful, and quickly turned to face Keran, expecting a possible counter-attack.
Ah, but I didn't hit him either.
She resumed her fighting stance, but did not immediately attack. Instead, she smiled, her eyes wide and her breath slightly quickened with excitement.
"Thanks, and you're a lot faster then anything I've fought before! You almost got me back there."

Okay...now, let's see how good her reflexes are. I also want to see if she has a good resiliance to pressure.
He got back into a fighting stance and focused completely on his opponent. Keeping a low stance, bending forward, he slowly walked toward her, and stopped when he knew he had her into his striking zone.
Now...what will you do ? I can attack whenever I want to. And I have the time to react before you get me within striking distance. And if you wait, you'll begin to feel pressure.

Tila raised her sword defensively as Keran advanced, anticipating an attack, but the fact that he did not attack once he was in range puzzled her.
What is he planning? Why is he standing there?
Taking the initiative, Tila dove to her left and Keran's right. Her dive became a roll as she hit the ground, with the intention of hitting Keran's back and knocking him off balance as soon as she got in range.
OOC: Sorry again about the late reply.

OOC: don't worry about the late reply...I won't be posting very often as well, because of my exams...
Keran didn't lose a second and reacted immediately.
You're not the only one who can take advantage of your size.
The sheikah somersaulted above his shorter foe and tried to hit her at the same time.
I doubt she expected this one.

Indeed, Tila did not expect Keran's counterattack, which came at her in mid-roll. Already in motion, there was little Tila could do to dodge the attack, which hit her square in the bottom. Naturally, her own attack missed Keran completely.
Ouch!
She scrambled to her feet at the end of her roll and involuntarily held her left hand to her bottom for a moment. Although it was just a sparring match, she appeared to be annoyed at Keran's last attack. Shaking off her discomfort, she impulsively leaped up toward him with her sword held high, ready to bring it down on him as she landed. However, Tila attacked too fast to analyze what Keran did after his successful attack.
"Hyaa!!!"

Keran had not expected Tila to react so rashly. Her fierce attack left possibility for a counter, but he decided against it.
That would be counterproductive.
His aim was not to beat his shorter foe, but to know more about her as a fighter. As Tila was in the air and could therefore not change direction, he simply leapt backward to avoid the blow.
"Okay, truce !" he said as he held his hand in front of her. "I have a few question to ask you, now."

Duh, of course he would just move out of the way. How silly of me! I should have at least waited to see what he was doing...
Tila stood up after her failed attack and paused to catch her breath and cool herself down. Hearing Keran's request for a truce, she lowered her sword and got out of her fighting stance, standing normally.
"Truce. What is it, partner?"

"Well, by seeing you fight, I'm beginning to understand what kind of fighter you are; but I think I should have started by the beginning, that is: who taught you ? Did you learn by yourself ? And I am also curious to know what kind of opponent you usually face..."

Oh, I never told him about that.
"Well, I think I mentioned that I wanted to learn how to fight so that I could protect the forest like the Legendary Hero did. Well, I actually got to see him fight a little bit before he continued his quest, but he didn't actually train me. Some of the other kokiri have used swords before, but I don't know many that ever got into an actual battle..."
Tila paused, fondly remembering one specific blond-haired kokiri from years ago who fought off some monsters before leaving the forest, never to return. She then roused herself and continued.
"...none of us were really masters, though. I pretty much learned how to fight on my own. My opponents were scarecrows at first, but then I started going to the Lost Woods to fight real monsters."
Her hand unconsciously felt a familiar tear in her tunic, where a wolfos had gotten a lucky shot and scratched her at one time.
"It was pretty rough at first, but it got easier as I practiced and after I finally learned how to use magic. How about you, Keran? How did you learn to fight?"

He raised his eyebrows.
Uh, me ? Oh well, I should have expected her to ask me the same question.
"Well, my training began when I was just a little kid. The shorter of the two wakizashis - that's how these short curved swords are called - I wield is the one I used when I was a child. And when..."
He paused for a few seconds.
"Wait...as a kokiri, you're probably unfamiliar with the concept of childhood. You know what aging means, do you ?"

Tila smiled.
"Actually, I do know what it means. The Great Deku Tree told us about it once. It's how everybody starts small like I am, but then they grow up over the years until they are big, like you. Well... everybody does that except for us kokiri."
Tila paused and looked at Keran in a funny way. Suddenly, she burst out laughing.
"He he he, sorry Keran! I was trying to imagine what you looked like when you were small. It didn't come out right..."
OOC: Now that would make a good picture! Just kidding.

Keran stayed silent for a few seconds, raised his eyebrows, and replied:
"Well, when I try to imagine what you would look like if you did age, it doesn't come out quite right, either...um, anyway ! Looking at your fighting style, and from what you've just told me...you've never fought with a humanoid, well, with somebody wielding a weapon, am I correct ? Until now, you've only fought monsters and the like, right ?"

She paused, remembering the colorful assortment of monsters that she had encountered in the Lost Woods over the years.
"Pretty much. Sometimes I've run into a monster or two that looked vaguely like people and some carried weapons, but most of them were just beasts and plant life. Still, nothing that I've faced before have been as cunning as-"
Tila suddenly cut off her sentence. Her expression became alert and her long kokiri ears stood upright, as if trying to locate a quiet sound.
"Wait, do you hear something?"

Keran calmly untied the knots that tied together the sheath and the hilt of his wakizashi and nodded. Then, he made a surprised face and said:
"Huh ? Nope. You must be mistaken. I don't think a bunch of outlaws would dare to attack a sheikah like that, anyway."
The young sheikah then discreetly showed his partner four fingers.
Understood ? There are four of them, spying on us.
OOC: is it okay with you if Keran and Tila are attacked by outlaws rather than monsters ?

Although somewhat confusing at first, Tila understood the meaning of Keran's hint and confirmed it with her fairy. She pretended to relax, but was secretly getting ready to aid her partner in battle.
"Yeah, guess I was just hearing things, partner, and it would be a bad move to attack someone like you." (Or someone like me, but they don't know that.)
Tila kept Ting flying about nonchalantly to keep an eye on the outlaws while she got to work on freeing her Kokiri Sword from its sheath.
Keran was right, it's just like he said when we first met. Not everyone from outside the forest is trustworthy. Hopefully they will decide not to attack or will give up once we start to fight back. If not, then we are going to have a real battle on our hands...
She kept working at the knots she had tied with her green headband.
...this time, I won't be fighting monsters...
Tila looked up at Keran with concern in her eyes, momentarily unsure about what to do.
The knots are too tight! I can't get my sword out!
OOC: Sure, that's fine. As long as they attack first, Tila is ready to fight beside Keran.

Keran was relieved to see that Tila had perfectly understood what he expected her to do, and smiled in his inner self when he saw that Tila was quite skilled when it came to putting an act.
Good...now we can take them by surprise.
But then he saw Tila's misfortune.
Oh, my. Too bad then. Time to drop the act. They will be more hesitant if they know we're ready.
The sheikah drew out his wakizashi and, in one swift motion, cut the knot that tied Tila's sword.
"Sorry for your headband, but this is serious."
He drew out his second wakizashi.
"Okay, guys...come out of the shadow, now. We know you're here. I suggest you should explain why you're spying on us, if you don't want us to take immediate action."

Tila reflexively blinked as Keran slashed at the knot, but wasted no time in removing the remains of her headband from her sword's hilt and drawing out the newly freed blade, the sheath lay temporarily discarded on the ground.
"No problem, I would have had to do something like that anyway."
Except I would have had to use some of my magic to do it; that or reveal the existence of my hidden knife...
Hearing Keran's declaration to the bandits, Tila moved in close to Keran to cover him from behind, but was careful to leave him enough room to maneuver. She waited for the bandit's response, a determined look on her face.

Tila's manoeuvre had Keran smiling inwardly.
Well...it looks like this is not the first time she's teamed up with somebody.
Then, the bandits came out of the shadow. There were three of them. Two ordonians and one hylian. The three of them had their sword drawn out, and they all had a metal shield. They wore dirty clothes that people who live in the wild usually wear and were smiling viciously. Keran noticed that one of the ordonians was heavily scarred and appeared to have survived violent battles.
The hylian spoke: "Don't maim the kokiri. We won't get a good price if she's missing a limb."

Tila's temper flared at the hylian's remark and her green eyes glared at him fiercely while she barred her teeth. However, she remembered the mistake that she made in her sparring match with Keran and managed to restrain herself from attacking recklessly. Barely.
"Price?! What do I look like, a pet? I am not for sale!"
She gripped her sword tightly in her right hand while her left hand hovered around her side, near her belt. Despite herself, Tila could not help wondering who would buy a kokiri from these bandits and for what purpose...
OOC: Where did the fourth bandit go? Is he still hiding?
