Description
Deku Scrubs, as their names imply, appear as living, bushy scrubs with a scarcely humanoid shape. They are often short, rounded, and stubby, no more than perhaps 3 or 4 feet at most. They are composed entirely of wood, usually lack arms (with the notable exceptions of merchants and others), and have leaves on their heads where humans have hair. They often have red, glowing eyes (denoting that they may be nocturnal), and their mouths are short, hollow tubes incapable of closing.
The Deku Scrubs, being plant-like, behave much the same way in their survival. Lacking the ability to consume food matter, they are photosynthetic, relying on the leaves on their heads to process light much how a tree would. Their simple feet are capable of burrowing in the ground, not only allowing them cover, but a means of absorbing water and minerals as well.
History
Little is known about the history or origin of the Deku Scrub, mostly due to their own relative seclusion and their lack of willingness to discuss it. Like almost all beings of the forest, they were created by the Great Deku Tree, whose name they bear. As such they have been a part of forests throughout the land, with their ancient kingdom having been founded in Termina.
It is interesting to note that despite their relation to the Great Deku Tree, few Deku Scrubs seem to bear any sort of reverence or even knowledge of him.
Culture
Deku Scrubs, at least as their presence in Termina is concerned, are similar to the Zora in their monarchial society; they boast a mercantile-fuedal kingdom of merchants and commoners, ruled by a Great Deku King and his royal family. They appear very fond of music, boasting lively proccessions and avid pipe-playing.
It is interesting to note that Deku's appear to lack individual names, as far as any outsiders can tell. Instead they are denoted as Dekus, followed by their class or role in the society; such as Deku Princess or Deku Butler. This probably demonstrates a sort of caste-like sense of role and duty that is prevalent in their society.
Though they demonstrate a reclusive and even xenophobic mentality, Deku's are normally intelligent and chatty, if not shrewd. They're mentalities vary tremendously from forest to forest encompassing anything from the feral, violent Mad Scrubs to the practical and sophisticated Merchant Scrubs (which are often considered a sub-species). Deku Scrubs are known to be rather likable if not helpful once they open up. They are known for often possessing useful knowledge in the name of practical hints, rumors, and secrets.
Deku Scrub procreate through pollination and seeds between a male and female.
Abilities
Deku Scrubs are among the weakest of warriors, as their bodies are light and wooden, flammable, and they cannot survive in water(their mouthholes are unable to close, thus, they drown). However, they have learned how to skip along the water for a few times to prevent from drowning.
From their mouths they can shoot a variety of projectiles, ranging from non-explosive Deku Nuts to bubbles to sticky goo. Deku Scrubs are incredible burrowers, able to become hidden underground within seconds. Once rooted, they can create a small bush over where they hide, from which they can pop in and out instantaneously. They can even fire themselves from their holes to achieve vertical ascension.
While Deku Scrubs are able to grow propeller-flowers to allow them to glide through the air temporarily, some Deku's(particularly Deku Merchants) have developed their own propeller leaves and are capable of flight not too different from Peahats. This is a slow helicopter-style flight, though, and cannot be relied on for speed or dogfights because of its sluggishness.
What the Deku Scrubs lack in physical or magical capabilities they make up for in the wide range of unique skills they inhibit, making them useful allies on an adventure.
