Name: Vatten
Race: Zora
Age: 32 years.
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 153 lbs.
Eye Color: Black and fishy.
Hairstyle: A big ol’ headfin.
Nationality: The Tetra Isles.
Description: There isn’t a terrible amount that separates Vatten from your natural Zora. He’s not old, so he still has the preferential Zora physique, but not young, so it’s matured quite well. His differences lie in his scars. Being a sailor by trade and a fisherman by hobby, Vatten has gained himself many scars and marks that differ him from everyone else. His scars are mostly over his hands, arms, and upper torso, but his legs have quite a few marks on them as well.
Seeing as how he is Zoran, Vatten has a natural tendency toward not wearing clothes. He has donned a hat, though, that is three-sided in a triangular way, and is very piratey. Oddly enough, that is, indeed, all he wears, and it can be quite off-putting the first time you meet him. Especially if you’re not of the Zoran species, and are more accustomed to clothing.
Vatten is missing the ring finger on his left hand. It was bitten off by the largest fish he ever caught, and the fish unfortunately made off with it. Now it’s disgusting. It’s not infected, really, but more of a swollen, jumbled nub that ends at the bottom knuckle. A clean bite, though, straight through with no serrations.
Personality: You’ll always know Vatten when you see him by his odd gait. He walks in a manner that could remind one of strutting, though he never comes off as arrogant in his speaking. In conversation, one would never really confuse Vatten for an orator, but he is quite the blowhard, always telling stories about this gigantic fish he once caught and that hurricane he survived. Nobody really knows what’s true out of it, and some are convinced that Vatten can’t tell the difference anymore either.
The Zora is always amiable, and in fact, nice when talking to people. He’ll donate some rupees to the orphaned child on the street corner, help the old lady carry her vittles into her home, and even give some financially-challenged passengers free passage on his ship, the Mariner III. What he doesn’t like, however, is a person who’s too cocky for his own good. Those people, he’ll fight every time.
Now, this isn’t to say Vatten is a saint. By all means, he isn’t. In fact, he’ll drink up a storm whenever he’s ashore and in a tavern, and often get kicked out of the port the next day. Vatten is a nice drunk, and is friendly with everyone (too friendly with some of the ladies), but he likes mischief. He’ll start things on fire, then admire the view, bottle of booze in hand. Usually, he has some local miscreants beside him, and they’ll have done the actual work, with Vatten just thinking up the ideas.
Being alone a lot, Vatten has acquired the oddity of speaking some of his thoughts aloud. Most of these incidents are to himself, when he’s working on his boat alone or something. They keep him company on the high seas and often keep him out of trouble. Seeing that the Mariner III isn’t a terribly large vessel, he’s able to work alone most of the time. However, when he has passengers aboard, or is ashore himself, he will quell the random voicings. That’s not to say, however, that he doesn’t sometimes speak his mind unwittingly when around other people. It just doesn’t happen very often. He’s also, thanks to this solitude, developed a knack for cursing. Oh, how he loves his cursing. Curses like a sailor, in fact.
Finally, the Captain isn’t a very violent man. Unless someone insults him, his ‘muther’, or his ship, the Zora can move on. However, if they do decide to pull out one of the aforementioned stops, he will give them an earful, and they can expect to be smarting before they get home that night.
Weapon: Being on a ship, Vatten has never had much use for a long-range weapon. He carries a short-sword, comparable to a cutlass. It has a wide blade, and is perfect for fighting on board a ship or otherwise in close quarters. Anything longer would be unwieldy and get easily tangled in the rigging of his ship.
Shield: Both the shield and sub-weapon are the same, in this case. In another sheath on his belt, the sailor carries a sword breaker, which is a sword-like instrument shaped in a way that champions a sleek blade on one side and a ridged curve on the other. If Vatten finds himself on the defensive, he can turn the sword breaker around and capture the opponent’s blade in it, then twist the breaker quickly to snap the other sword at the hilt. Then voila, the opponent is unarmed.
Sub-Weapon: See “Shield”.
Inventory:
Common Items:
-Grappling Hook
-Blue Jewelry (necklace)
Uncommon Item:
-Water Bombs.
Other Items:
-Fishing pole right inside his cabin on the Mariner III.
-Extra rope and material for the rigging and sails. Also stored on the ship.
-A small knife to cut ropes and sails when they get caught on things.
-A sextant to read the stars and find his way.
-A map showing the islands of the Great Sea and the recorded wind/current patterns along the way.
Skills: Naturally, any good sailor must be worth his salt when it comes to sailing. From the mast to the brig (a makeshift cage underneath the deck), Vatten knows every inch of his ship, and can sail it as fine as anyone ever could. In fact, he would probably tell you he can sell it much better than anyone could.
Also, Vatten is a pretty good navigator, and can tell by lining the stars up with the horizon not only which way he’s going, but also where he is on a map.
More than that, he is also skilled at various feats of acrobatics, such as quickly climbing up the mast, swimming quickly, running quickly, and he’s also strong enough to hold a rope when it snaps, just to keep the mainsail fully out.
When it comes to swordplay, Vatten’s no master, but he can certainly defend himself.
Finally, Vatten can cook, though not well. He makes his own food out of whatever he can drag out of the water, and whatever non-perishables he can buy while he’s ashore.
History: Nobody is quite sure where Vatten was born anymore, though it’s quite clear that he did, in fact, have a birthplace. To hear him tell it, one would assume that the Zora was born in the middle of the ocean, far from any land, on a trading ship owned by his parents. He tells that the ship was caught in the middle of a ferocious hurricane, and the stress was just too much for his mother, who popped him out right there on deck. Quickly, the rain washed all the birth fluids from his body and the infant Vatten went on to help his parents get out of the storm.
Now, that story isn’t true. If one is truly curious about Vatten, they can search through the records in the Tetra Isles region to find that he was born on Windfall Island to two loving and beautiful parents. They were traders, sailing goods from one side of the world to the other, or merely ferrying a couple of passengers from Windfall to Dragon Roost. It isn’t as exciting as Vatten would prefer, perhaps, but it’s a true story, and there’s some comfort in that.
Vatten would have you believe his life has been a very exciting one, full of twists and turns, love and betrayal, friendship and loss. His favorite story involves ferrying a Windfall aristocrat from his home on Windfall all the way to the Forest Haven so that the man could pay homage to the Great Deku Tree. Along the way, the Mariner I was attacked by fierce pirates with cannons and grappling hooks. To hear the Zora tell it, he swam with the aristocrat on his back all the way to the Forest Haven, though it was many leagues. That was how the original Mariner was lost, but there were two more to come.
Actually, this story is no where on the record books, nor is there anyone known by the name Vatten often uses.
The truth about Vatten is that he was raised by his parents in a middle-class home on the island of Windfall. They owned a ship, the Ruto, named after some long-dead Zoran princess who was apparently linked to them by some obscure family line. To be honest, Vatten was never interested in the whole ‘family history’ thing, and was much more interested in adventure and instant gratification. He was bred into the business, so to speak, since he would accompany his parents on their many trips to Dragon Roost, the Forest Haven, and even distant Outset Island. In such, he learned at a young age the wind patterns, the islands, and the cultural differences of the Tetra Isles.
The thing is, Vatten never took to his parents’ way of life. He couldn’t sell things like they could, and was just never successful like that. People would get along with him just fine, but he wasn’t a persuasive person, no matter how many tricks he learned from his parents. So, when he came of age, and they bought him a ship, he did not follow in their work, but instead went to ferrying passengers between locations. And, when the ‘windfall’ from that career didn’t ‘keep him afloat’, he would fish.
Being a Zora, Vatten is a very good fisher, and had always been one. He could go into the water with a net that was hooked up to the ship on the other end, and come up with a load larger than anyone else on the island. But he never really enjoyed it as much as he enjoyed hauling people from one place to another. It wasn’t as social -and he was a social person- and got quite lonely on many occasions. So the Zora captain kept to his ways of hauling people around.
The second ship was destroyed about six years ago when a giant squid came out of the water off the coast of Outset and devoured it. Vatten was lucky to escape with his life, and swam to the shore, where his many cuts and bruises were treated by the medical minds of the island. Soon enough, he bought passage back to Windfall, where he bought another, larger ship with his savings, named it the Mariner III, and went back to doing what he loved.
In the time since then, there have been no major accidents, and just a few minor run-ins where Vatten’s scar count was added to. But life is life, and the Zora is quite content with ‘going with the flow’.
