Generations ago there was a terrible and tragic war, a conflict that consumed all the lands and kingdoms and left no one untouched by its cruelty. The denizens of Hyrule have for so long remained at peace, that the very thought of such a conflict remains unimaginable today; no one today could ever grasp that the world was once within a thread of total destruction.
No one knows for sure the details of the war‘s beginnings, who struck first, why and where. All that is known is that it involved the corrupting and all-powerful presence of magic; magic so great it leveled mountains and armies alike and could tear the very fabric of the land with ease. And this magic, as terrible as it was, could only have come from one celestial source: the Triforce itself.
The Three Goddesses, pure but one could dare say naïve, introduced the raw essence of the Triforce to the people of Hyrule, as a gift for all. The Trinity intended to for them to make great use of its magic properties, to create, heal, and strengthen. The ample magic within its core had the potential to do great things for all. Yet tragically this very power of good was as much a force of evil than anything else that could’ve arrived in Hyrule.
All that great power, however good it could do and however infinite it was, grew more and more tempting in its relevance. As various tribes, kingdoms, and even individuals got hold of but a fraction of it, it became apparent just how potent its most finest of fragments was. Imagine controlling all of it…
Greed and corruption took hold. A desire to control and manipulate, to hold more power and from there more sway, began to infect the minds of entire kingdoms. Like a great plague, the lust for power spread and simultaneously drove thousands to the brink of murder and madness to achieve it. The most noble of rulers, the most mild-mannered of citizens, all were driven to do whatever it took. Not only did all declare war upon each other, but on themselves as well; they drove away the pleads of their conscience, some say that of the Goddesses even, and strove to gain even more.
What became was a total war. All were involved, and those that weren’t remained alert or affected. The Triforce was chipped away, contested, and passed throughout the hands of one tribe after another, leaving a path of death and destruction in its wake. No longer were the people of Hyrule merely content with fighting for it. Now they aimed to preserve it, intent on actually wiping out all other potential heirs to its power. Total War became total mass murder on a scale unlike any before or since…
Then, as quickly as the Triforce and all its woes appeared…it all vanished. The terrible, powerful magic that helped corrupt and destroy…largely gone. The will to fight, dissipated. The survivors seemed to have awaken to a land ravaged by modern warfare and horrible magic forces alike. Their trance of warmongering and misery was gone. The lands of Hyrule silently, almost surreally, picked up the pieces and moved on, desiring to put the great and costly conflict behind them. An almost silent, unanimous agreement was made by all that survived; that they would never allow themselves to bring war upon each other again. And thus, innumerable centuries since, has the land remained in eternal peace, the Triforce and its taint absent…for the most part…
